An Issue Keeps "Cropping Up"

Hello all,

I’m new to CLZ! Nice to have such a cool site to create a listing of all my comics, finally. I’m also new to the forum! I wanted to ask about two things and, actually, at the recommendation of Alwin and the CLZ staff, to throw them out to the forum members for feedback. I’m separating them into two different posts to give people a break because each is a little long. This post (An Issue Keeps “Cropping Up”..) is followed by a related one (Streamlining the Custom Photo). For personal reasons, I don’t use Facebook which means I don’t have access to the many thousands of users there on the CLZ page. If anyone wants to post these on FB as well, I very much appreciate that. In any case, It’s great to have access to those here on the forum for their insights and feedback.

In a nutshell, I wanted to do a lot of custom photos for my collection due to its age. It’s about 3500 comics total and about 1/3 Silver Age and 2/3 Bronze Age, with dates from 1961 to 1979 (the last year I collected). I basically have no modern comics. My grades (only three are slabbed) are in the range of VG to VF by my best guesstimates, with some outliers above and below. Because of this, I wanted actual photos of my books so I could have a true archive. A couple of things came up along the way to trying this, and the first was my custom photo jumping when I tried using the cropping tool in the app. The strange part was I’d read about this happening somewhere and when it did, I thought “..Crap! ..It’s happening to me..!” I was even a little annoyed thinking the issue hadn’t been resolved. It was random- sometimes it did, sometimes it didn’t and I couldn’t tell from anything I was doing. I went back online and saw several posts about issues with the cropping tool and scanner, and lumped them all into my issue (in my head) when I contacted CLZ.

But, Alwin pointed out that they’ve had no feedback about this and those other posts were actually about other things (cropping tool going back to uncropped image after done, scanner causing warped images after several had been loaded, etc.), and they were resolved. He searched the forum, the FB page, did a Google search, and nothing on my issue. Since then, I haven’t been able to find anything either. Bizarre! I know I did read about it… maybe in a review or comment on another site like CGC. In any case, I was able to film it happening with the screen capture on my phone and send it to CLZ. It was Athan-Jon who discovered that if you went outside the borders of the custom photo while cropping, this would happen. In most cases, a cropping tool won’t go outside the original photo boundaries (and won’t with the stock photos because there’s no empty space around them to go into). But the one on the app does allow you to go outside the borders and into the empty space (black) surrounding the custom photo you took, and if you do, the image will jump up when you lift your finger off the screen. They’re now looking to get that fixed and maybe even a different cropping tool. In the meantime, I discovered if I put my finger in the space below the crop, I could pull the photo back down into the cropped area and then accept it, saving a lot of time vs. starting over. Still… obviously they want to fix this and I appreciate them looking to do so. It may be that they’ve worked on it already because it does seem as long as you come back inside the border of your original photo before releasing your finger, the photo won’t jump upwards. Before, it would even you did come back inside the original border before releasing your finger, if you had gone outside any time. Anyway, here’s the first question…

QUESTION 1- Has anyone else had this issue or experience with the photo jumping up during a custom photo crop? If so, please let CLZ (and other users) know. Most just use the stock photo that’s loaded after your scan because it’s perfectly great and so convenient. But, I thought I’d ask and CLZ thought it would be good to throw it out and see if anyone else has actually experienced this? Maybe I’m the only one! Looking online, it seems like it due to the lack of other posts (except for those mystery ones that seem to have fallen off the planet!) /:

The next post is really a continuation of the above and has to do with realizing pretty quickly that it would take me forever to try to load custom photos of all my comics. Please see the next post. Thanks!

I find I have more control over cropping functions if I save the photo to my photos in an iOS device and then use those cropping tools until I find the image the way I like it then I go to CLC and import it from my image folder.

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t have an IOS device but I think it’s a good idea, especially if you are saving a custom photo only infrequently. I am still hoping CLZ will create the ability to make a custom photo of a comic you just scanned by having the photo link (and crop link) available right then so you can use it versus the stock photo. Again, this is because my whole collection is older Silver and Bronze Age comics. The cropping technical issue will get resolved at some point, according to Alwin. In the meantime, I noticed if you come back into the border of the photo before releasing your finger, the cropped image won’t jump up but will stay put.
