The Color field is currently a tri-state field. My request is that it should be changed to a drop-down list like Country or a multi-select field like Format, as a normal list.
Reason:
(1) Color is the assumed default for movies, and so should display as blank. Also there are variations eg Technicolor and, most importantly from my point of view, there is a real distinction between Color and Colorized (ie a b/w movie which has had color added)
(2) “black and white” is rather long and “bw”, “b/w” or “b&w” all seem to me to be preferable. Also some mono movies are not b&w but are sepia, and were always intended to be shown that way. Similarly some early movies are tinted with different scenes having a single tint applied, so should be listed as “tinted”
(3) “both” appears on the template without a label between country and running time, and makes no sense unless you know the exact layout of the template. Also “both” could mean that I have a b&w and a colorized version of the movie, or it could mean that part of the movie is in color and part in b&w (eg Wizard of Oz).
(4) I include things in the database other than movies (eg Actor summaries or greatest film lists) as a convenient place to keep them. Here the color field ought to be blank.
Having this as a normal list would mean tahat I could control my data better.
I was making the trivial point that, in your example, it is fairly obvious that the film was made in the UK, that its soundtrack is in English and that it is 136min long, but it is not obvious what the word “Both” is referring to, unless you know the structure of the template.
But, if you implement the other change - the ability to hide fields from the template - then I can user a User defined field instead, depending upon how UDFs are implemented.
As for UDFs:
Edit screen: All custom fields will be placed together (you decide the order) on 1 single Custom Fields tab.
Details Panel: All custom fields will be placed together (you decide the order) under 1 single Custom Fields header (you can not place them “next to the cover” etc, they will be grouped together)
If you want to place them anywhere, that would more likely be a new feature for like modifying the entire details panel and drag stuff around. This is an existing idea, but I can’t promise this will ever happen though.
