Detective 700

Detective Comics, Vol. 1 #700 needs a little help. This is part missing and part error, so I put it in the error section…

First, 700B is supposed to be the newsstand edition. The Core cover is a repeat of the direct edition. The newsstand cover is:

Then, I don’t think one of 700C and 700E should be indexed based on your current standards. 700C is an envelope. 700E is the comic itself.

Because you don’t treat a bag as a variant, I would assume the same applies here. So I think it makes sense to merge C and E. I personally like the envelope view, but I could see where keeping the comic image makes sense, too.

However, there is a newsstand edition of the envelope. The front cover matches 700C. Barcode 07447030465432.

So when it’s resolved, I think you should be left with five versions:

  • Batman holding the sword DIRECT
  • Batman holding the sword NEWSSTAND
  • Batman holding the sword DC UNIVERSE LOGO
  • The Batman envelope with Ra’s al Ghul comic DIRECT
  • The Batman envelope with Ra’s al Ghul comic NEWSSTAND

Thank you for bringing this up. I have merged E with C. What doesn’t help is that these are being graded with the envelope. Most of these I see online are still sealed. I’m really leaning towards keeping this (the envelope cover) in and not treat it as a polybag, more like a dust cover for for books/hardcovers. Especially since there are 2 different versions. What do you think?

I agree with you on all counts. It is more of a dust jacket. It would be odd to have a direct/newsstand edition of the comic but it’s the envelope with the unique barcodes.

Perfect. Added!
