So…Custom Fields are AWESOME-SAUCE!! And using them, I’ve at last been able to add legacy numbering in a way that a) makes sense to me, and b) doesn’t break the system or mean the CLZ crew has to do a whole lot of new coding.
For those who also may want to track this, what I’ve done is create three custom fields:
Legacy Title as a Pick List field (so Amazing Spider-Man or Batman)
Legacy Number as a Number field
Legacy # on Cover? as a Fixed List field with “Yes,” “No,” and “Original Series” as the attributes
And it. Works. GREAT! Sorting by Legacy titles allows me to easily see how many issues of a legacy series I have, and to then sort by legacy numbers, so I know the reading order. Truly a game-changer (at least for me).
I have to input the legacy number even if that is the actual issue number. Otherwise the issues won’t sort properly. Just means a lot of data entry, but it’s do-able. All I need to do is set aside a few weekend afternoons – rather than dodging work, as I have been most of today.
I’d originally wanted to do a Yes/No toggle for if the number is on the cover, but that meant ALL comics got that field, even if they weren’t a legacy title. But the fixed list actually worked better, as I can then indicate which is the “parent” series.
The only thing still on my wish list at this point is for selected custom fields to appear in cards rather than only lists. True, I can still sort by legacy number, but it’d be nice to see that number in the card display, too, as only a handful of series use legacy numbering.
Certainly interested to hear how others have addressed this particular topic…
You’ve been busy! Looks awesome, and thank you for your kind words.
You could (at your own risk) use the Transfer Field Data tool: It would allow you to pick the issue nr field as source data, and copy it to your custom “legacy number field” for all comics you “select”.
select comics (perhaps All Comics and select all)
click the 3 dot icon on the action bar
transfer field data
choose issue nr as source field, and choose your legacy number field as destination field.
This can not be reversed though, but at least you will get a number in your legacy number field, for all comics at once.
Would you want the “Yes/No” toggle field to always have a third option like “N/A” or “Don’t Care” which would then make that particular toggle “not show up” in details panel?
(we’re considering adding this)
This is not related to custom fields, but we do have it on our ideas list, and it will likely happen, for the user to be able to change out 1 or 2 fields to make them show up in Card Views!

That’s SUPER helpful (!!), particularly for runs that are longer (such as Action, Detective Comics, and Uncanny X-Men).

Personally, I think that’s a great idea. Then you can have the “Yes / No” response only appear in the comics where it applies. (My “original series” attribute serves a similar purpose, but it’s unnecessary because obviously the legacy number is on the cover. )
Also great to hear that adding fields to cards is on the Ideas List. ‘Cos personally, I think that would be great, adding just that extra bit of customization.
One other note on how I’ve been handling this: I’m only adding one issue of a given number to the overall legacy numbering (so no variant covers or extras I may own). Likewise I’m skipping the “.1” or similar “adjacent” issues (though I did include G.I. Joe 155-1/2, as it’s technically part of the overall story and run, rather than a side story). This is so I have a clear idea of how many (generally consecutive) issues I have from a given run, as the regular view can show me how many comics I have from a given series.
Again, Custom Fields is a GREAT addition!! I’ll update this thread once I’ve completed all my legacy numbering updates so you and the rest of the community can see how it went.
Please do We love hearing what people are using it for. BTW: are you already a member of the “CLZ Comics” group on Facebook? It is a great place to find tips for using the app, to ask questions, to discuss comics and to read the latest news about app updates. The CLZ team is active in the group too!
