Marvel Masterworks Confusion

Hi there and happy after Christmas! I noticed something has changed in the Marvel Masterworks listings. I have quite a few of the late-2000s to early-2010s TPB reprintings [in the mostly black covers] and they were listed as expected previously, similar to the way some of them still are [see below]:

However, something has changed and several are now showing up in random and odd ways. For example, volumes 1-5 of Amazing Spider-Man now shows this way [all sorted under ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ rather than ‘Marvel Masterworks’ as before]:

Similarly, here’s how 1-7 of Fantastic Four appear [sorted under ‘Fantastic Four’ now vs. ‘Marvel Masterworks’:

These alternate volume numbers are confusing, not to mention random issues being broken out as separate titles. Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man volumes also appear in this oddball way.

I noticed a separate thread that’s been ongoing for awhile about numbering corrections. All I know is the late-2000s / early-2010s TPB reprints follow a sequential vol# within each title - Spider vol 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. Can someone check? Thanks!

@CLZ_Justin

Hi, no confusion on our side :slightly_smiling_face:. I’m fully aware of how these books/series works. In the process of correcting these however the way you see it now, might not be how it’s going to be when it’s done. So still a work in progress! I’m in London at the moment. When I’m back next week, I’ll make sure to pick this back up again :grin:

Thanks @CLZ_Justin ! Yeah my wording may not have been the best (haha) - was just indicating that it now appears confusing to me whereas before it was straightforward. Hopefully you guys can figure out a straightforward way to track these books going forward [which I know is not easy - why can’t comics numbering be normal, haha :)]. Thanks again!

Hi @CLZ_Justin , just thought I’d share a little more detail about this issue. Originally, there was one title: “Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spider-Man”, with the first 5 volumes which I own. Now, the first three are listed under that title:

But volumes 2 and 5 were suddenly pulled out into separate series in a confusing way, listing them as “Marvel Masterworks Vol. 22” and “Vol 5”. I should note that the indica on all of these 2009-2010 TPB versions appear exactly as they were originally listed in the core - in this case, as “Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spider-Man Vol. #”, with the number matching the volume for that series.

I’m aware of the original version of Marvel Masterworks and how they have a numbering system going by release date and not by character. But this second series has a totally different approach that [to me] is way more intuitive.

Perhaps the original series could somehow be identified with a “Vol 1” for the series as a whole, and this 2009-2010 TPB version could be labeled as “Vol 2”? So for this series it would be “Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 2” for the ones I’m showing above. Just a thought! I’m sure it’s convoluted to sort through.
