Marvel - Title and Indicia don't match

The Iron Man series from 2022 said “Invincible Iron Man” on the cover, but just “Iron Man” in the indicia. It is listed in CLZ as “Invincible Iron Man”.

Now the current Thor series says “The Mortal Thor” on the cover, but just “Thor” in the indicia. CLZ lists it as “The Mortal Thor”.

How do we feel about this? Is it more important to list things the way that it reads on the cover or how it is listed in the indicia? Is there a slippery slope to using the cover title?

I vote for “how it is listed in the indicia”. Sometimes between solicit and printing the actual title changes and CLZ team does its best based on cover art and solicit text… then the issue comes out and it’s “Thor”, so yeah it needs to be changed in Core.

Our guideline is definitely the indicia unless it makes a title harder to find. When a title is solicited on PRH/Lunar/Diamond, the title they use and we get in is the title on the cover. So unless we open the book on release or someone lets us know what the indicia says, we don’t know what the indicia is

Invincible Iron Man, Vol. 4
So did some digging on this title. The title on the cover is “Invincible Iron Man” through out the entire run. Issue 1 starts with just “Iron man”, however starting #6, they changed the indicia title to “Invincible Iron Man”. So this will remain as is.

I’ve pitched the idea to implement a fix for this to AJ. We’ll probably won’t see this fix anytime soon though but it’s on the ideas list! This would fix other titles like X-Men > Uncanny X-men and the recent All-New Venom > Venom.

Mortal Thor
I’m aware of Mortal Thor being just Thor, we’re holding off on changing this one. When people are looking for that title now, they look for Mortal Thor. My guess is that this will revert back to “Thor” eventually. Then we’ll change it!

Changing a title isn’t something we can just do. It can have some ramifications for peoples database. Alwin and AJ could get a lot questions with the problems it has cost. Especially when volume numbers get switched around. It can cause series to mix with each other.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention though!

Yeah, I have no problem changing a series name or sort order on my end but the issues come up with future volume numbers on your end. Like the original “X-Men” was just “X-Men” for the first 130-something issues before becoming “Uncanny X-Men” in the indicia. So I broke those issues out as “X-Men, Vol. 0” since the 1990’s series was already “X-Men, Vol. 1”. But in the case of these Iron Man/Thor examples, I can’t really do that.
