As noted in the pictures above there seem to be pockets of books with no characters listed. They are from varying time periods. Is there a way to update these manually or in bulk?

Indeed there are comics in our online database that don’t have characters filled in (yet).
You can tap a comic, then tap Edit, and then go to the Character tab to manually add characters - does that answer your question?
If I add just the books main title character manually, would this interfere/prevent an update that adds all the characters to the book at a later date from core?

Yes it would “prevent” an update, your character list would be marked as “custom” and that always overwrites whatever is in Core, for what you created locally in your local database.
You can of course always edit a comic and tap “Core Characters” to let it download the Core characters again (or for the first time).
There is no way to see which books “now” have characters for books you’ve set to custom.
I think I would just let them stay Core, and update your database once in a while to get the latest data.
And for books where it is really important for you to make sure that a certain character is noted there, because you need to group on that character… well, for those I recommend just using Custom and filling in that character.
