Plot
From Ocean to Ocean - On September 25, 1513, the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa became the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean. Departing from the city of Santa María la Antigua del Darién, which he had founded two years earlier, he crossed the Isthmus of Panama with 190 Spanish soldiers and a thousand Indigenous people, eventually reaching the Pacific coast.
This historical comic recounts the events of that crossing—filled with traps, attempted betrayals, and confrontations with Indigenous peoples—which would culminate in the discovery of an ocean still unknown to Europeans. The engaging and well-researched script by Cristóbal Aguilar Jiménez is paired with the sublime watercolor artwork of Enrique Breccia.
Originally published in Spain to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, this book presents a new facet of the immense talent of the Argentine artist.
