Recently started to add wishlist to my collection. However, I noticed when I went to re-index by date added, it re-indexes those on my wishlist as well. I want to re-index just those in my collection, but not on my wish list as I don’t consider those in my collection. I was going to do this, but want to make sure I don’t mess it up. Please advise on how to handle as I know once I re-index it’s non-reversible and I have too many in my collection to correct.
To get an up to date number on my collection due to deleteing dvd’s when I convert them to blu-ray (or 4K), as I don’t need duplicates (usually trade the duplicates in at that point). Sometimes if I had singles seasons and then find the box set…same scenario. Been using the feature for along time. I just recently started using wish list….and then noticed that the items on my wish list had index numbers on them. I know I can see the actual number of each when I switch the from In Collection and Wishlist…but it’s just when I look at the actual collection and it switches from a number and the next number is 50 or so after the last number. Just wasn’t sure if there was something I should do different. No problem and thanks for getting back to me quickly!
If you change your ‘Folders’ to ‘Personal > Collection Status’, that’ll show you the total of everything in your collection that hasn’t been marked as something else, like ‘For Sale’ or ‘On Wish List’. It’ll also show you the total of everything altogether still. Does that help any?
FYI, when I upgrade my DVDs to Blu-ray or 4K, I like to mark them as ‘For Sale’. That way, it makes it easy for me to find them when I want to get rid of them. And then once I’ve sold them, I can either delete them or change them to ‘Sold’.
It does help a little…I go between platforms (web & mobile app)…which that does work on both…It’s just a ‘me issue’ with the numbers jumping when I add/delete…I like when I look and the numbers are in ‘order’ in my collection….(maybe a little ocd on my part ). I appreciate all feedback!
Yeah I figured, we see it more often with “just want a number that goes in order” - and that is of course a valid thought/wish.
Just some information on how the index field was originally intended, when we first started with the software 25 years ago:
People use the Index numbers for stuff like putting stickers with a number on their DVDs (to easily locate them in their DVD room). Therefor, each Index number is only used Once.
When a number is deleted, the next added DVD will still increment on the last added DVD.
If you have #s 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
You delete #4
The next DVD you add will automatically be #11. #4 will not return.
If you manually change #11 to #4, the next DVD you add will be #12 - so you will be missing #11.
That said, @JonathanW suggestion works pretty good if you just want to see totals of your Collection Statuses. Also on mobile.
A question:
We’ve at some point considered to have a setting that would simply say “enable row numbers” - where the number is not connected to the movie entry but just shows the row number where that movie currently sits.
It possibly could…I just like ‘an order’….please know that I hope you think I’m not complaining…..I have used the app for a long time….(way before the web based)…I also use it on my phone/ipad. I highly reccomend it to people who I talk to that have collections as well, and still will! I always snicker when I see you have an update and think “what can they really improve?” and then I look and it’s “wow! that’s pretty neat, or gee…I didn’t even know I would need that!”.
I’m definitely not seeing you complain here, I’m just trying to extract a feature/idea from your need to “re-assign index” and have that done on just a subset (if the field is not meant for that). But I think we’re quite far into this process now

Ahhh, I think I see what you’re trying to do now, @djb. I was trying to think if one of the other existing fields might be able to work for you, like the ‘Storage Slot’ on the ‘Personal’ tab or something. But without the ability to automatically update that field as you remove items, it really wouldn’t work the way you’d like I don’t think. But, yeah, like @CLZ_AJ was suggesting, maybe a row number on the list view would work well enough? Although, I suppose it wouldn’t have to be limited to the list view either.
We’ve always been hesitant on adding a row number, because.. it doesn’t feel useful. It’s an arbitrary number, like if you sort the list A-Z, a different movie will be “1” than when you sort by date modified.
And the total number of “rows” in the list, well, that is just the total shown at the top of the list anyway.
But, the people have asked for this.. so yeah it’s on our ideas list still. Same would go for card view etc. I suppose, it would just be a number, which is not attached to the movie then.
