Suggestion: Configurable Template

Have a Configuration screen in Settings which shows each data field and whether or not to display it on the template.

Reason

(1) Some fields are really usful in the database (eg Date Modified), but I only use them when I am editing the database - I do not want to see them on the template - it only clutters up the view.

(2) When we get User Defined Fields I will transfer some of my data from existing fields to UDFs, and re-populate the standard field from Core, but not want to see those values. eg I gave my own set of Genres and don’t like those supplied by Core but it would be useful to have (but not display) the Core Genres to help me check my database.

This is on the ideas list to allow switching on/off of fields in details panel. But if you keep them empty they won’t show (of course not for date modified and date added).

As for User Defined Field - why would you want to re-populate the standard field with Core data but “not see it”. You mention “check my database” but I don’t understand it.
Doesn’t really matter though if we ever decide to greenlit the idea of allowing to show/hide fields in details, you can do it - just curious.

Glad to see it is on your ideas list.

Making a field blank certainly works, but then I have to discard some potentially useful data.

I haven’t downloaded data for fields like Genre for a long time, so things may have improved, but I found that the downloaded data was rarher idiosyncratic, with lots of different spellings or variations for what is essentially the same genre.

The result of this is that the Folder view becomes too long and not terribly useful (to me), so I prefer to use my own Genres.

BUT the downloaded Genres are generally correct in some way, so they contain useful data.

At the moment I am adding my Genre “Western” to my collection. I am using external lists of Westerns to see which are in my collection, but to find out if I have them I have to type in the name of each one.

If I used the Core version of Genre I could use the Folder Westerns (as defined by others) to mark up my collection, deciding whether I considered it to be a Western or not.

Some Genres like “Drama”, “Romance”, “Comedy” seem to be overused, which is why I create my own more focused lists.

So what I am trying to say, though not especially well, is that the Core Genres are a great starting point for helping me assign the genres that I want to use. I would like the Core Genres there when I am sorting out my database, but don’t want them cluttering up things the rest of the time.

I hope that makes some kind of sense.

It does indeed make sense.

Our genres come from IMDb though, not from “others” - but that should make them even better for putting them into the “right direction” for you

I to would like this feature. I’m excited to have the user defined fields, but afraid they will be stuck at the bottom of the viewing template. At the very least I would like to see them after the actors and cast area.

Another request is to be able to turn off/on is the color button. I make up some unique collections that I don’t want to see that field or just add a button that says N/A like you have in the layers drop down list. When you check N/A is does not show up. Thanks
