Bad Database Entries, Really Really Bad

Just signed up and paid for this software. Used bar code entry method for 121 comics, database says I have 160. It also says one of them is Batman Vol. 2. I don’t own that. What is going on? If the bar code entry system does not work this is not for me… What is the point of bar code/scanner if I have to proof each and every issue???

I’ve moved your topic to CLZ Comics Web as it looks like you own the Web version.

Bad database entries
I’m thinking your bad entries are because you’re scanning the first bit of the barcode, and not the extension. That can give bad results. If you add without looking then those results will indeed come into your collection.

Total comics
Checking your collection I currently see a total of 27 comics.
Not 121, not 160. Perhaps you’ve already started over?

Batman Vol. 2
Looking at Batman Vol. 2 issue 1D, I see you scanned “070989304307” for that.

That seems to be way too short a barcode (if you scan such a short barcode without the extension in the Add Comics screen it will come up with 127 results, and the top result would be Batman Vol. 2 issue 1D, which isn’t what you own).

CLZ Scanner
I’m also seeing you use CLZ Scanner to scan.

So let’s reset for a moment.

When you scan a barcode using CLZ Scanner, for comics, please set the toggle to “EXT”, so it will scan the EXTENSION of the barcode as well which is important to actually choose the right edition.

I would recommend to start over and clear your database. If you wish to try that, click:

  • menu top left, then maintenance
  • then clear database

Now, open the Add Comics screen and just scan 1 or 2 barcodes using the CLZ Scanner set to the EXT toggle (the toggle is on your screen).

Now visibly CHECK the results if it picked up the right comic?
Then add them to your collection.

I hope with that information you should be scanning the right barcode, and get the right results in no time. Let me know how you go!

Harold,
How is CLZ Comics Web working out for you now?
Have you been able to resolve the problems?

No, actually they are worse. Last month spent a lot of time entering (NOT with a bar code scanner) about 350 comics manually and now what I see is 27 or so. I would have done better just setting up an Excel spreadsheet and typing it all in by hand. This is turning out to be a huge waste of time. I use databases all the time and am very geeky, but this is pointlessly complicated and killing me…,metaphorically.

Harold, I do hope you will stay in contact with me on this because everything you’re seeing is stuff I can definitely help out with.

You have created an extra collection. You can switch between collections at the bottom of the screen in CLZ Comics Web.

You can see that you have 29 in one collection, and 261 in your other collection.

Did you not want multiple collections?
If that was not your intention, you can click the menu top left and then click Manage Collections. You can merge collections: click the little X next to one of the collections then click MOVE COMICS TO, and then click the other collections.

Then after, let me know what else you’re running into, I’ve also commented on your use of CLZ Scanner, and using the EXT toggle in my post from November 18.

Thanks for the reply.

No I did NOT want multiple collections and I have NO idea how they got that way. I am going to try to figure out out the merge them, if at all possible, right now.

I have been using PCs since the day they were invented, which means I am most likely twice the age of anyone at CLZ. I have paid tons of money to have database programs written for my business and I have designed input/output forms many times. I have never seen a database that was more counter-intuitive than this one. Sure, it’s pretty to look at and has lots of nice graphics, but in terms of usability and making any kind of sense at all: ZERO.

I am not stupid, but this thing is almost impossible to figure out. And as for the ‘forum’ I spent half an hour last week trying to find a way to create a new post and could not do it – I could only respond to an existing one.

Your premise seems to be that this is a ‘secret’ club and unless I know the exclusive handshake there will be no entry. Wow!

All I want is to complete this listing of comics and then I will go away and bother you no more. Does that work for you?

Best,
Waring Abbott see waringabbott.com

That is very easy. Just select entries then from the blue selection action bar, select Move to Other Collection.
(looking at your account, you already managed to do so, as I now see 264 comics in ONE collection).

I am 56 here. CLZ Sytske is 56 too.

That is the complete opposite of what we are hearing from other users, each and every day.

What are some things you found counter intuitive?

And as for the ‘forum’ I spent half an hour last week trying to find a way to create a new post and could not do it – I could only respond to an existing one.

In every forum section, there is a big “New Topic” button at the top.

Sure, we will help you do that, with please. And absolutely no need to go away after that.

At this moment, what do you need help with?
