eBay?

What is that? Can I delete it?

It takes you to a search of that album in eBay. You can disable it in settings.

Not cool in a paid product, even if you can toggle it. I feel the default should be set to disabled if it absolutely has to stay. Nothing like double dipping the revenue streams.

I feel the same. My heart sank when I saw it. Why would I need to have an ebay button showing on items that are already in my collection? Hidden wiith a disappointed sigh.

Some people use the “Wishlist” feature. Also, for us vinyl collectors, there are many different releases of albums. However, that being said, I don’t think anybody worth their salt is incapable of just manually opening a new tab and searching FleaBay manually if they want to. It’s a pointless feature for users, but it’s probably providing some sort of secondary sponsorship income to the Devs. If this helps keep my subscription fee from rising, I don’t see the harm as long as it’s able to be toggled invisible.

Yeah, I understand it being on the Wishlist thing - it seems the devs do, which is why theyvve included an option for that. It could even be a useful feature, even if rarely used, but for it to suddenly appear on a service I pay for, not cool

As I say, I understand it for wishlists, and if I’d have seen it in there, I might have even given it a slight nod of approval, but now it’s turned off permanely, and I hope it never darkens my door again. It has its uses, but it’s been implemented badly (IMO)

It’s a hark back to the bad old days, when an affiliated Amazon link was inserted into the Links section on every album you added (yes, I’ve been using it that long!)

Coming from the desktop app, I find the web app to be horribly lacking in features. I would have much preferred to see some actual feature development work instead of whatever this choice was…

I agree it was a bit disheartening to see what amounts to an eBay ad in my paid subscription. The reason given was to be able to link to sales/value data for an album, but if that’s the case then the link should be to Discogs, which has much better and more usable information.

The “find on eBay” links in the details panel is indeed a new and OPTIONAL feature that we introduced recently.

The details panel for your CLZ Web software now includes automatically generated eBay search links, next to the cover image, that let you search eBay to find listings for that particular item.

These eBay links can be useful for two reasons:

  • For the items you own: easily get a feel for that item’s value, by finding its’ Completed/Sold listings on eBay.
  • For the items on your wish list: easily find available copies on eBay, for you to purchase.

Of course, this feature is OPTIONAL. To switch it OFF completely:

  • open the Settings screen from the menu
  • in the Settings screen, look under “eBay search links”
  • there use “Show/Hide eBay links” toggle and set it to “Do not show in my CLZ Web”.

Instead of switching if OFF completely, you can also:

  • opt for a more subtle placement of the link further down the details panel, under Links
  • opt to show it for Wish List items only

I am sad to see so many of you are seeing this as an advertisement. We thought we were adding useful functionality. I am seriously considering to remove this completely.

Wow… We spent ONE week of development on this, with ONE developer.
Other than that, our THREE web-developers are continuously working on features and improvements.

We introduced this feature over all five CLZ Web apps, for movies, books, comics, music and video games. With most of the demand of this feature coming from the comics audience, where eBay is THE play to check sold listing, to find items you are still looking for.
So we decided to implement eBay links, for all five Web flavors.

Sure, Discogs would also be useful for CDs and vinyl. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is this really the professional response that you want go with, Alwin?

Sure, you seem to be blaming me for not spending our development time correctly. So yes, I think I am entitled to defend myself. This is a discussion forum, right?

We have 3 full-time developers working on the CLZ Web software, with many big updates released recently, like two big re-design updates and a huge CLZ Music specific update with new fields. And big things coming up later this year.
All our focus is on the Web-based software and on “actual feature development work”.

This new “eBay links” feature was based on feedback we saw from users of our comic database software and, in lesser numbers, from our game collecting users. So spend a short time building these links, with these collectors in mind.

And in the end, we figured we’d roll this out for all five CLZ Web flavors. We had done the investment of development time anyway…
But, apparently, that’s was our big mistake

User of the CLZ Comics Web software are loving the new links, and looking at our stats, are instantly using them a lot. Users tell us they can’t wait to get this feature in the mobile app.

CLZ Music Web users? Not so much :frowning: We have seen one “somewhat happy” user, but other than that, loads and loads of negative feedback.

So in the meantime, we have decided to REMOVE this feature from CLZ Music Web tomorrow.
Still contemplating about the book and movie flavors, we may decide to remove the feature there too and just leave it active for the comic and game editions.

I’m not quite sure that I was blaming you by stating what I preferred. As a product owner, when someone says that they are finding the new product to be problematic or lacking features from the old program, this would be a good be place for you ask questions.

And listen, I get that some people may find this useful. What I don’t think was a good idea, was setting the default state to enabled. But that’s just my opinion. Again, as a human, I have preferences. Please don’t that preference as me blaming you for something else.

As a long time user of your products, this interaction has certainly been eye opening and given me a lot to think about whether I will be continuing with your products moving forward. Thanks for shedding light on these things.

That part was not what I was responding to.
If you are coming from the Music Collector desktop software, I can fully understand that you are finding the CLZ Music web edition “lacking”. That is fine, that is normal, depending on what features of the desktop software you were using. I am fully aware the following are not available in CLZ Music Web:
– add CDs by scanning them in your CD-ROM drive
– catalog and link to music files
– catalog extensive track level info (CLZ Web only has Artist/Title/Length for tracks)
– catalog extensive classical music specific details, like Composition, with all the Composition sub fields. Composers and Composition at track level, etc…
– User Defined Fields

And that is fine. We know that. No need to discuss that. We have done those discussions so many times, I know exactly what people need, what people are missing. So that is why I did not ask you about that, also assuming you were aware of all the earlier discussions on this forum about desktop vs web.

What I was responding to in your initial post was THIS part:

I would have much preferred to see some actual feature development work instead of whatever this choice was…

That just triggered me, sorry, as we are continously doing feature development work. And this eBay link feature took no time at all, most of the time was spent creating all the setting for customizing it.

And listen, I get that some people may find this useful. What I don’t think was a good idea, was setting the default state to enabled. But that’s just my opinion.

I have heard that comment/suggestion a couple of times in the last week.
BUT: we are not going to invest in a feature that we believe (or BELIEVED…) would be useful feature for our users… and then switch it OFF by default. There would be no point to that, as less than 5% of users would then know about it, and even less would actually use it.
If we need to introduce a feature and disable it by default, then it is NOT a good feature for the majority of users and so should be completely removed. So it is likely that that is what we are going to do.

As a Music Collector diehard, I would never have had the E-Bay link. Nor do I use ‘wish lists’. However I can see the utility of a wish list with readily available links to Discogs, Ebay & Amazon, which is where I look anyway. Really can’t understand this hatred of EBay. Some of the sellers are outrageous, but that’s true of Amazon too.
Not concerned about using selling sites to gauge the ‘value’ of my music collection. It means everything to me, but as to money “that’s not what I want”

I don’t understand the “hate” you receive. It can be turned off, so what is the problem? How many complaints did you get? I have the feeling it is less than 0.1% of the users that made it clear they don’t like it. I only see a couple on the forum. So I think there are many users that either like it or don’t care at all.

My first response when I saw the eBay links were:

  • why is there eBay advertisement added? The way it is presented feels like advertisement.
  • why spend time on this instead of UDF? (found on the forums what the situation was, I understand)

I had the feeling I saw the eBay links in the app before I was updated via the newsletter. Not sure if this was the case. If I saw an update before it was added my first response would be different. I had too look on the forums to read that it can be turned off. Didn’t cross my mind to see if it can be turned off in the settings.

After a short while I was thinking of how it could be useful to me. The way I am collecting movies does not require an eBay link. So today I turned it off. I also was thinking on why it was enabled by default. After I read the negative feedback on the forum I also though: why didn’t you introduce it without enabling it by default. Now I read your thought about it and that also makes sense. I also agree if almost nobody uses it: remove it. Saves maintenance hours in dev time.

I am also a regular contributor/visitor of blu-ray.com and they also have this:

and over there I do like the functionality, because I use that site when I am looking for new movies. I don’t use CLZ to find new movies so for me not useful in CLZ Web for movies.

When I look at game and comic collectors I can imagine an eBay link is much more useful for them. I think movies, music and books are in general not worth anything, not like many games and comics. Of course there are exceptions. I personally don’t buy or want movies because they are rare and thus expensive.

Maybe an idea for new features: show a banner in the web app when a new feature is added with some instructions if it is that can be turned off or configured. Or a link to more information.

At the moment, it appears that was a short burst of negative feedback, partly even from users who saw the eBay logo BEFORE they received the email explaining the update.
Part of the negative feedback was here on the forum, part of it on facebook, then some by email.

However, currently the negative feedback has completely died down.
Also, looking at the statistics or our eBay partner account, it is the CLZ Music users who generate MOST of the clicks (looking at the avg clicks per subscriber).
So the feature appears quite popular under CLZ Music users

I had the feeling I saw the eBay links in the app before I was updated via the newsletter.

Yes, this was live for almost a day before the email went out. That was definitely part of the problem.

Quoted from today’s email:

Two weeks ago, we introduced the new “Automatic eBay search links” in your CLZ Web software. After launch, we received quite a bit of feedback about this feature, both positive and… let me say… less positive :slightly_smiling_face:

So we sat down, went over all feedback, and then came up with some tweaks to make everyone happy!

First, I have to repeat: this feature is OPTIONAL.
Most users love having the quick and easy access to eBay listings for their collectibles, either to:

  • easily get a feel for an item’s value, by finding its Completed/Sold listings on eBay.
  • easily find available copies on eBay, useful for your wish list items.

However, if you don’t see the value in this, if you don’t find this useful, then you can easily DISABLE this feature in the CLZ Web’s Settings screen, on the bottom right, under “eBay search links”.

Here’s what we changed and added in today’s update:

  • Details panel link next to cover image: we remove the eBay logo, so that the link is less “in your face” and more subtle.
  • Link text will now shows where it takes you (“find on eBay” vs “find sold listings on eBay”)
  • New optional position: on the toolbar of the details panel (ON by default, switch it OFF in Settings)
  • New optional position: add the eBay link as a column in the List View
  • Settings: when disabling the entire feature, the rest of the settings are instantly hidden, as they don’t apply anymore.
  • Settings: when disabling the entire feature, the eBay link is now also removed from the Value tab of the Edit screen.
