Errors and Inconsistencies Across Several Titles

This is the final out of four posts listing errors and inconsistencies I ran across while importing ~8000 comic books into CLZ :). Sorry for the amount but hopefully most of these aren’t too bad.

  1. All-American Comics
    a. Volume 1 should be “All-American Comics, Vol. 1” for consistency with other series
    b. Volume 2 is named “All-American Comics: Cold Heart”, it should be “All-American Comics, Vol. 2”

  2. All-New X-Men Annual - should be “All-New X-Men, Vol. 1 Annual” for consistency with other series

  3. Amazing Spider-Man: Aim Toothpaste Giveaway # - in the core, the issue marked “#” is a separate title, “Amazing Spider-Man: Acme and Dingo Giveway”

  4. Atari Force, Vol. 1 - incorrectly lists each issue as “Ashcan” in Variant Description field [they are smaller comics but not ashcans]

  5. Blue Ribbon, Vol. 2 - should be “Blue Ribbon Comics, Vol. 2”

  6. Captain Carrot - should be “Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!” [with the !]

  7. DC Silver Age Classics, Famous First Editions, and Millennium Editions - inconsistency between how these series are treated. Silver Age Classics and Famous First Editions are listed as separate series while Millennium Editions are treated as variants of the originals. My opinion: SAC, FFE, and Millennium should be treated separately because there are numerous differences - essays, unique trade dress, etc. Replicas should be treated as variants. BUT - if Millennium will stay listed as variants, likely DC Silver Age Classics should as well [not FFE as it’s treasury sized].

  8. Detectives [Alpha, 1993] #1 - two variants [one Red and one Gold] show as duplicates of each other when I click “Find Duplicates”. They are not duplicates, they are variants of the same issue.

  9. Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men 13-20 - with issue 13, the series was renamed “Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear MAN”

  10. Human Fly
    a. Volume 1 (Marvel) should be “The” Human Fly with a “, Vol. 1” designation
    b. Volume 2 (IPI) should have “, Vol. 2” added

  11. Illustrated Classics (King Classics)
    a. This title is simply King Classics, not Illustrated Classics. Indicia and cover only show King Classics.
    b. Issue 2 mistakenly lists Hawkeye in the Character field

  12. Infinity Inc. Annual/Special - should be “Infinity Inc, Vol. 1 Annual/Special” for consistency

  13. Karza - should be “Micronauts: Karza”

  14. Limited Collectors Edition
    a. 53-56, 58, 60, 62 - these issues were titled “All-New Collectors Edition”, not “Limited Collectors Edition”
    b. 59 - variant description is “All-New Collectors Edition” which is incorrect; this issue is named “Limited Collectors Edition”

  15. Lois Lane [1986] - should be “Lois Lane, Vol. 1”

  16. Many late 70s/early 80s titles - list Whitman variant as the “A” variant; I would think the standard company edition would be “A” and Whitman would be “B” or “C” [Examples: Action Comics Vol 1, Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1, Fantastic Four Vol 1, Superman Vol 1]. Obviously this would be a large task to change it and is a judgment call. Thought I’d mention it nonetheless :).

  17. Marvel Monsters - both issues are simply named “Marvel Monsters”. Each should be “Marvel Monsters: [Subtitle]” (see below). As it stands now they show as duplicates when choosing “Find Duplicates”.

    • Marvel Monsters: Where Monsters Dwell
    • Marvel Monsters: Fin Fang 4
  18. Micronauts - volumes 3, 4, and 5 (Image, Devil’s Due, IDW in that order) not listed with volume designations. Some series use volumes and others use company names. [Personally I prefer volumes for a series name regardless of publisher]

  19. Optimus Prime First Strike 1 - out of all the one-shots for this crossover this is the only one without a “:” after Optimus Prime, would recommend adding it for consistency

  20. Origins of Marvel Comics - lists publisher as Marvel but should be Simon and Shuster

  21. Popeye, Vol. 1 (IDW) - should remove “Vol. 1” as it’s the only IDW volume. There are several Popeye volumes but it depends on how they’re identified. Should probably be “Popeye, Vol. 1 (Dell/Gold Key/King/Charlton/Whitman)”, “Popeye, Vol. 2 (Harvey Classics)”, and “Popeye, Vol. 3 (IDW)”

  22. Shazam!, Vol. 1 #1 - key listing implies this is the first appearance ever of Captain Marvel [it is merely the first DC appearance]

  23. She Hulk, Vol. 3 - the 2017 series is mistakenly listed as Vol. 3; most online listings (GCD, etc) shows issues 159-163 as an extension of Vol. 1

  24. The Shield (Red Circle)

    • #1 and #2 are actually titled “Lancelot Strong, The Shield”
    • #3 is actually titled “Shield-Steel Sterling”
  25. Space Ghost (2005) #1 - all metadata is for the 2024 series rather than the 2005 series

  26. Spiderman First of 60 Years - incorrect title, should be “Spider-Man: The First 60 Years”

  27. Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider Vol. 2 - this current series is actually “Spider-Gwen: THE Ghost-Spider” to distinguish from the earlier “Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider”. So it shouldn’t be volume 1 and 2, should be two separate titles

  28. Star Trek 100 Page - issue listed as “12011” instead of “1”

  29. Star Wars (Vol 1) Dark Horse and Star Wars Vol 2 (Dark Horse)
    a. Vol 1 is actually titled “Star Wars: Prelude to Rebellion”, not “Star Wars”
    b. Thus, Vol. 2 should not be labeled as Vol. 2 but simply as “Star Wars (Dark Horse)”

  30. Superman (Radio Shack) - for consistency with other giveaways, may want to label as issues 1 - 3
    a. 1980 - issue 1
    b. 1981 - issue 2
    c. 1982 - issue 3

  31. Superman/Batman: The Silver Age Omnibus - title is actually “Batman and Superman In World’s Finest: The Silver Age Omnibus”

  32. Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man - variant description is “Marvel Treasury Edition” which is incorrect, this isn’t part of that title

  33. Superman/Fantastic Four - issue # listed as “GN” which I assume means “Graphic Novel”; this should be changed to “1” as this is a treasury comic

  34. Swamp Thing, Vol. 2 - should be “Saga of the Swamp Thing”

  35. The Flash: Rebirth - there are two volumes; each should be labeled with “Vol. 1” and “Vol. 2”. Currently the two series show as duplicates

  36. WildC.A.T.s. Vol. 1 - “S” not capitalized

  18. Not necessarily, it is the 1st appearance of the character as Shazam. If it weren’t for that name change and publisher switch, I believe Captain Marvel would’ve been on the pile of forgotten heroes. I have added “in DC comics” behind it, thanks!

*[Fixed] DC Comics - Whitman Question

I’ll continue with the ones I left out empty and edit my comment above during the process. Just wanted to let you know that it was being worked on. Thank you for posting these, we really appreciate you taking the time to go trough them!

Thank you so much @CLZ_Justin!! By the way for your own tracking, #13 on my list got skipped in your summary [even though you fixed it], so your #13-35 = my #14-36.

Couple of follow-ups:

a. Issue 2 of Atari Force, Vol. 1 still has the “Ashcan” designation in the variant field.

b. Regarding the series listed below, can they just be treated as two separate series?
- Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men 1-12 and Nuclear Man 13-20
- Limited Collector’s Edition 20-52, 57, 59, 61 and All-New Collector’s Edition 53-56, 58, 60, 62
- Lancelot Strong, The Shield 1-2, Shield-Steel Sterling 3, Steel Sterling 4-7

c. Regarding King Classics, I happened to notice issue 11 has an odd variant description - “Signred by Philip Curtoh???” Not sure what that means but it appears to be an invalid variant description.

d. Regarding Infinity Inc. Annual/Special, the addition of “Vol. 1 Annual/Special” didn’t “take” apparently, it’s still unchanged after update from core

e. Regarding Marvel Monsters, they are now being listed as variants of the same issue, however the indicia indicates two totally separate titles:
- Marvel Monsters: Where Monsters Dwell
- Marvel Monsters: Fin Fang 4

f. Origins of Marvel Comics - change must not have ‘taken’; publisher still shows as Marvel but should be Simon and Shuster

g. Shazam! - thanks for the change! So the issue actually still refers to the character as “Captain Marvel”, not Shazam. He is still called Captain Marvel from his first DC appearance in 1973 all the way through the new 52 backup series in 2012 when Geoff Johns renamed him “Shazam”. The only thing different is the cover title has to be Shazam for legal reasons. My personal opinion is that the key text should simply read “1st app. Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) and the Marvel Family in DC Comics”.

a. Fixed
b. Yeh that’s something we’re not going to do. Part of what makes this database better than the ones out there is how easy it is for all sorts of collectors to find a certain book. The cover scan feature fixes a lot of these issues. You would know where to find something but others won’t. When diving into a title, I’ll have the GCD open but my god is it hard to find a specific issue sometimes because it has been split into 4 different titles. If it’s still part of that volume, it should belong together. Hope this answers your question

c. Seems like the person who submitted that was not sure if his copy was signed? :joy: Fixed!
d. Fixed
e.No, these were separated from each other with different credits, titles and dates. It might look like nothing has changes due to the lettering but I can promise you, they’re separate . I won’t be splitting them up in different series

f. This should be fixed, did you set it to allow to replace all? If that doesn’t work. Please remove and add it back
g. Interesting! I didn’t know that, will look into this. Thanks!

Thanks @CLZ_Justin ! Re: Origins of Marvel Comics, I just removed and re-added and it’s still the same. I should clarify my copy is #TP-A.

Re: Marvel Monsters - what I was getting at was each title is now listed as #1A, #1B, #1C, etc. as if they are all variants of the same comic book. But they are all totally separate titles in the indicia and in GCD with different contents in each comic. Just something to consider :).

I do see that Fin Fang 4 is listed as a separate series without the Marvel Monsters: tag, but not the other 3 titles. So Fin Fang 4 is in the core twice, as a separate title and as a variant of “Marvel Monsters”.

Hi @CLZ_Justin,
Since we had some back and forth with two lists, I thought it would be helpful to post a single list of outstanding items from my initial and later lists. I know you are working on these, this is just to make ‘what’s left’ easier to see!

  1. Amazing Spider-Man: Aim Toothpaste Giveaway # - in the core, the issue marked “#” is a separate title, “Amazing Spider-Man: Acme and Dingo Giveway”

  3. Marvel Monsters - all 5 titles are listed as variants of one series as opposed to separate titles, except “Fin Fang 4” which is in the core twice - once as a Marvel Monsters variant and once as a stand alone title.

  4. 3 (IDW)”

  5. Shazam!, Vol. 1 #1 - key listing indicates the character name is “Shazam”, but he wasn’t renamed Shazam until 40 years later in 2012; not the “first mention of the Shazam name”

  6. She Hulk, Vol. 3 - the 2017 series is listed as Vol. 3; most online listings (GCD, etc) shows issues 159-163 as an extension of Vol. 1

  7. Star Wars, Vol 1 (Dark Horse) and Star Wars, Vol 2 (Dark Horse)
    a. Vol 1 (Dark Horse) is actually titled “Star Wars: Prelude to Rebellion”, not “Star Wars”
    b. Thus, Vol. 2 (Dark Horse) should not be labeled as Vol. 2 but simply as “Star Wars (Dark Horse)”

  8. Superman (Radio Shack) - for consistency with other giveaways, may want to label as issues 1 - 3
    a. 1980 - issue 1
    b. 1981 - issue 2
    c. 1982 - issue 3

  9. Superman/Batman: The Silver Age Omnibus - title is actually “Batman and Superman In World’s Finest: The Silver Age Omnibus”

  2. So the reason behind this is that the millenium editions are true reprints (like facsimiles). DCSAC uses new colorists which is why they got their own series. And as you mentioned Famous First Editions are treasury size, which is why they’re not with the main series. So this will remain as is.

  3. I think you’re mistaken by the digital series. Which was later “reprinted” as Fin Fang Foom Returns. There is no duplicate of the Monsters Fin Fang Foom in Core.

  4. Fixed

  5. Fixed

  6. I’m actually going to give it it’s own series. From what I found it’s a continuation of “Hulk, Vol. 3”

  7. It’s not, it’s the story title so this will remain as is.
    Screenshot 2025-03-19 at 15.16.41

  8. Fixed as #1’s. They’re not continuations which why I did what I did

  9. From what I found there are 2 versions with the same cover. One is with the older DC logo and the other with the newer as an “&” instead of a “/”>

This however will remain as is. It’s the exact same as #1A.

Thank you very much @CLZ_Justin! A couple of follow-ups:

  1. Amazing Spider-Man: Acme and Dingo Children’s Boots Giveaway - this is now listed as a variant of “Amazing Spider-Man: Aim Toothpaste Giveaway”. I was trying to indicate it should be a separate title since it’s a giveaway from an entirely different company.

  2. She-Hulk, Vol. 4 - great change, however there was already a She-Hulk, Vol. 4 from 2022 so there are now two series with the same name. The 2022 Vol. 4 should now be renamed to Vol. 5 I suppose.

  3. Superman/Batman: The Silver Age Omnibus - thanks for the details! What I was getting at is - the title doesn’t match the indicia you posted. It should be either “Batman/Superman in World’s Finest The Silver Age Omnibus” or “Batman & Superman World’s Finest: The Silver Age Omnibus”. The current CLZ title has the names swapped and doesn’t include “World’s Finest” in the title.

  1. Not everything needs their own series and they’re not variants of each other. They were all distributed as Aim Toothpaste Giveaways. Which is why they will remain as is. They have their own credits and and unique descriptions.

  2. This was edited when I moved them over. Did you do an update from Core and set it to allow to replace on series?

  3. Ah, my bad. Fixed!

Thanks @CLZ_Justin ! Re-updating She-Hulk fixed it.

I just noticed that She-Hulk, Vol. 3 Annual should probably be relabeled as She-Hulk, Vol. 4 Annual now - it matches the trade dress of the one you just renamed to Vol. 4 and came out a couple of months after Vol. 4.

Fixed!

Awesome! Thanks @CLZ_Justin !
