Feature Suggestion: Newsstand wizard

There might be a better catchier name for this, but it occurs to me that if you have a book with a newsstand barcode, there are a variety of things that you might want to check:

  1. Is it a Mark Jewelers?
  2. Is it a Price Variant?
  3. Are there particular inserts?
  4. (other things I might not be thinking of right now)

So was pondering the idea of a “newsstand wizard” where if the book is newsstand, then you could click the button and the wizard would remind you of the things to check for. Not necessarily specific to the book (although that would be amazing) but like if the cover date is within the appropriate range, it would remind you to check for Mark Jewelers, if it was within a span of time it would remind you to check for price variants (see here: https://youtu.be/KG8gapRV3nw?si=OVHaZYmHoSrjQXIZ), things like that. Or there may be inserts that are only in newsstand: Rare Comic Inserts Worth $$$!

I don’t think there’s a need for this for Direct since there are fewer options (or whatever there is, it’s less subtle).

But what would be the end result? Why would you want to check on these? What happens if you say “yes it is a price variant” in the wizard?

Is this basically a suggestion for the “Add Comics” screen when scanning a barcode that we see “is a newsstand” then the user has to answer 5 more questions, before they can finally add that single scanned barcode?

(I’m probably missing the point here, so please forgive me for asking this)

I think at the end, the answers to the questions would get added to a field, like Notes or Graders Notes.
Then the user could act on the notes. So here’s the flow I’m thinking:

User adds comic to collection (or there’s a button to do this later) and the book is newsstand.
Wizard opens up, first asks “Is this a Mark Jewelers” (because the issue falls into the period of time where it could be).
User checks the book and sees that it is not a Mark Jewelers, clicks “No” in the Wizard.
Wizard asks “Is this a $1 Canadian Price Variant?” (with example)
User verifies that the book is not a $1 Canadian price variant, that they didn’t accidentally select the wrong book. Clicks No in the Wizard.
Wizard asks “Does this have a Pizzazz insert?” (because the book falls into the appropriate timeframe) (with image)
User checks the book - it DOES have a Pizzazz insert! Clicks YES in the wizard.
(Wizard asks more questions, user checks things)
User clicks Finish at end.
Grader Notes for the issue has new note added: “Pizzazz Insert Included”

Had it been a Mark Jewelers or something that would dictate selecting a new variant, it would still just add a grader’s note, since not all of the variants are necessarily in the system. But the user could then manually select the new variant if it’s there, and delete the note.

The overall goal is to remind the user of all of the potentially easily missed (or unknown to the collector) details about an issue so that they can classify and note all of the details.

What if you could have your own custom fields (so the data did not come into notes), and then add all those notes to your Pre-fill Settings screen, so each time you add a comic, you can fill in all those fields for yourself?

(I’m really hesitant adding a wizard popup for newsstand editions where every user has to spend extra time so extra data can go into the notes field (and probably with questions a big chunk of our userbase wouldn’t even know what a Mark Jewelers is (yes, they exist, and they’re with many! And i understand your example thing here, but, well). We recently set the “pre-fill popup” to be “off” for new users and we’re seeing way more happy new users on this for instance).

Again, not shooting it down, but I feel that you might be happy of you’d create these as custom fields and add them to the pre-fill popup so you can always ignore or fill them in!

I actually have those custom fields. But I had to go in and add Tags to a bunch of comics to remind myself to check for these things next time I happen to be looking at the book. So in a way the goal is to replace those tags with a more comprehensive “things to look for”. So the focus is on the “reminder to check” aspect, not as much the documentation of it, which could be left up to the user as to how they want to do it.

So if you just create them as custom fields when that is alive, then you can easily just add your own custom fields as loose fields to your pre-fill, that way you’ll always be reminded.

If one of those custom fields is a Pick List field, you can group on it, and find all comics that have nothing filled in for them.

Or you could even make a Custom field (type: Toggle) called “Checked” and group on that to mark items as checked, or once you still have to check, of course.

Sure, but then you’re being reminded every time you add any issue, rather than being reminded to check for Mark Jewelers only when it’s a newsstand from June 1978 to May 1983 (I don’t remember the real dates, but that’s the idea).

In that case, for your request, and something you really want: I’d just have an extra “checked” toggle via Custom Fields.

Don’t use pre-fill at all.
Sometimes foldergroup by your own “Checked” custom field.
Tap the “no” folder, then start checking those you haven’t checked yet for whatever you need.

Or have a pre-fill field called “Needs to be checked” - which you toggle ON if you’re adding a newsstand, and be on your way. Then later check the ones that need to be checked.

(and have fields for whatever you’re checking on)
