Find Duplicate : possibility to save the result

I appreciate the Find Duplicate function and I use it a lot to harmonize all data accross my collection. However I’m missing the possibility to save a copy of the table (like printing a PDF version or even en csv export) . The printing in the browser does only print the first screen of the table.

Not having a seperate copy of the table makes me switch back and forth within the application between the find duplicate screen an the edit screen. If I had an PDF with the content of the duplicate table, I could stay in the edit screens to maintain my date.

Alternative: make it possible to start editing an item directly within the find duplicate screen (eg a little edit icon next to each item displayed).

Having a button to go to the edit screen sounds like a good idea.

In the meantime you could open the software twice, in separate tabs. In one tab you do “find duplicates” and the other you have the normal database.

You can copy the film name from the find duplicates tab into the search box in the Main database tab.

[An alternative would be to export the whole database as a CSV and use the features inthe spreadsheet to isolate the duplicates. Pivot Tables would do this easily.]

Can I ask why you need to be able to edit a movie you find in the “Find Duplicates” screen?

What are you using this screen for exactly?

This would work indeed.

I use the duplicate finder to keep my data in synch. I have purchased on purpose different versions of movies releases (for instance a 3D version came out later than the normal bluray, or DVD and then Bluray and now 4K etc.). And I want to have for each purchase a different entry in my collection for each physical item.

So I know that I have duplicates and I do not want to remove them but I want to keep these versions of the same movie in synch regarding their location , their genres definitions etc.

Buy the way, I found out today that I could (under Windows) use the CTRL+A keys to select ALL the Lines of the duplicate table and then paste it in excel to compare the lines. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m happy you now found a way!

But I’m still having troubles understanding how finding duplicates keeps “data in sync”.

If you have a blu-ray in your collection now.
The later you buy a 4K of the same movie and add it, you then just add it, and you have 2 entries of that movie, one in blu-ray, one in 4K.

Then that’s it right?

  • Or are you editing those new versions of them you added to have the exact same genre data as the first one (and all those other fields?) - that explains what you’re doing perhaps… hmm yes, that must be it. Right?

Exactly; there is a bunch of customized data to maintain if you want a ‚clean‘ database, especally if one wants the foldering to group the items correctly.

I wanted to print my duplicate list also. My collection is in multiple rooms and I want a printout of the duplicates so that I can pull the duplicate that I don’t want from the collection. I tried the cntl-a, it works but it also copies other data from that screen and I have to manipulated the output to get it in a format that I want. I have about 500 duplicates in my collection. Most of these are upgrades to 4K. This is the first time cleaning up the collection.

I haven’t used a home printer for decades, and never miss it. So I think you need to look for a printerless solution.

The Web version of the software can be run on any device which has a browser, and can be run on multiple devices at the same time.

What I would do is run the duplicates check on a mobile device (phone, tablet, chromebook) and carry that around from room to room. You can then make any changes you need on your mobile device, and refer back to you main computer only when you need a bigger screen.

This seems to do all you want, without requiring a printer, and indeed offers more functionality, at no cost (you don’t even need to pay for paper and printer ink).

Great to hear that I‘m not the only one interested in this topic. I still believe that the best evolution would be to make it possible to start editing an item directly within the find duplicate screen (eg a little edit icon next to each item displayed). An after editing an item to return to the duplicate list

And run the find duplicates automatically again, and be scrolled to top?
Or not? What if you change one of the fields while editing that you are also using to “find duplicates” - then the just edited item wouldn’t be a duplicate anymore.

I’m getting the feeling we’re trying to get the edit screen in the find duplicate screen for reasons the find duplicate screen was never intended. Very specific for your case @Allardl and I’ve written down your idea, but it’s not as simple as just adding an edit button.

I recommend to go for the 2 browser tabs solution for now.

Okay, let me try a different Approach: My ultimate goal is to use the Duplicate finder in order to identify and “mark” the duplicates movies (As stated before, I would like to keep them in my collection). I would therefore welcome an alternative to the “Remove “ or “Keep” buttons. Would it be possible to introduce a button that will somehow mark every movie in the group (or even the list)? I suggested in another threat to use a new Collection Status to be able to identify duplicates in a collection

Yeah we’re doing this conversation in 2 places now (now it really seems like many people might want this  )

I think we’re gonna leave it at this. I don’t feel this will be a good addon for the app right now, and I suggest to use tags, or custom fields.

In my case, my wife is not too computer savvy. It would be best to hand her a list of duplicates to pull and put in the physical “to sell” box. I know that I can mark these duplicate titles as for sale in the database. I assume that I would have to use the 2 browser solution to do this. Then I should be able to print the “for sale” titles using the “for sale” field. I’m learning more about this software as I am starting to manipulate my library. So far, I have just been adding to and building my collection.

If you really need to print stuff out, then you could Export your whole collection as a CSV and use the functionality of a Spreadsheet to determine the duplicates, and then print the resulting spreadsheet.

This depends on your expertise with spreadsheets. The job could be done very easily using Pivot Tables, which are available in most Spreadsheet programs , if you understand how they work

Printing the list of duplicates to a PDF is still on the ideas list definitely by the way @fivestarplus
