HDR field suggestion

Would it be useful to change the HDR field from a list into a multi-select checkbox option (like the Audio Languages field)? Some releases support multiple types of HDR, so it might be handy for us to be able to mark that a specific release has, for instance, Dolby Vision and HDR10?

Thank you for your suggestion. This has been suggested before and is on our ideas list as that is indeed how some releases have been coming out more and more. Would be a good one to add.

Not trying to hijack this Topic  , but some insights from my point of view surrounding the HDR field.

In the past I also proposed to have HDR multi-selectable. If I am not mistaken for physical media HDR only applies to 4K Ultra HD discs. Then we only have 5 options:

  • No HDR / SDR only
  • HDR10 Only
  • HDR10 and Dolby Vision
  • HDR10 and HDR10+
  • HDR10 and Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

I have not seen many movies with HDR10, Dolby Vision and HDR10+. I only have a couple of them, but I think HDR10+ is dead on 4K Ultra HD (please correct me if I am wrong). So you could say there is no real need anymore for multi select because if the disc contains Dolby Vision, by definition it also contains HDR10. I think the last release with both formats is from 2022. Only if it has both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ we run into a limitation. However it is still much nicer you can actually choose both or all 3 formats.

Secondly, the HDR field also has the option N/A (Not Available). In my opinion this suggest that HDR might be available on a format. Example: If N/A is selected on a Blu-ray disc, this suggests that Blu-ray can contain HDR. This is of course ridiculous. It is not “Not Available” on that particular Blu-ray or DVD, but it is “Not possible” on those formats. In the desktop app I created my own multi select HDR field:

(still need to rename SDR Only to SDR.)

In my opinion it makes more sense to use SDR instead of N/A for the HDR field. Maybe it sounds a little weird but if you rename the HDR field to: “Dynamic Range” with the following multi-select options:
SDR / Standard Dynamic Range
HDR10
HDR10+
Dolby Vision
it makes much more sense to me.

Not sure about streaming if they support both Dolby Vision and HDR10 at the same time.

Don’t know if you also viewed it from this perspective? Anyway, this is how I see it

We had a meeting on this today actually (it was on the ideas list for a long time, but as we’re preparing a round of new fields for all software, this came by today).

We are planning to make the HDR field “multi-checkbox” so you can checkbox as many as you need for your movie entry, and you can add your own (we will most likely allow you to add any that you want to have there)

Sorry, I am not a big fan of renaming it to “Dynamic Range”.

I think a field that is called HDR is much more recognizable for users, as “oh that is where I can indicate if the movie supports HDR”.

BTW: I think N/A stands for “Not Applicable”?

Good idea! I’ve been waiting for this for a long, long time, as more and more 4K-discs support both HDR-formats (HDR10 ánd Dolby Vision)

Agree. But I don’t agree with the rest of the world

If you look at the Dutch version it says N.B. (Niet Beschikbaar?).

If I look at the dictionary it looks like N.B. is not a proper abbreviation. I also checked English N/A and it has multiple meanings: Not Applicable, but also Not Available… confusing.

When the Field is changed to a multi select this confusion disappears. Will the desktop app also receives a small update to allow multiple values for HDR?

That is indeed not a great translation.
Should be “nvt”, niet van toepassing.

I am afraid not, no updates for the desktop software anymore.

Just curious what will happen when you have multiple values (even with custom entries) set to a movie in Web and then sync to Desktop.
And what happens when you sync back from Desktop to Web when multiple values were set in Web.

We’ll double check that, it might just sync one of them, and one of them back, causing you to lose the doubles you might’ve set on Web. In any case: it will not work fine, if you continue using the desktop version, then we will recommend not adding multiples.

Same that we’re now recommending to not use the “toys-2-life” option in CLZ Games Web/Mobile if you are actively using the Desktop version.

I’ve now changed the translation to n.v.t. by the way.

If it is causing problems I would vote for a solution to not sync the HDR field at all. So the Desktop is not receiving the HDR field from Web, and also not syncing HDR to Web. I could live with that if you ask me.

I think it is not a nice way to make the desktop version (or Web version) “unusable” when using the latest Web features. I think losing data when using both applications is a bad proposal.

Don’t know when User Defined Fields will be available on Web, so not syncing at all is maybe only a temporary inconvenience.

I don’t know how we could resolve that without doing an update for the desktop software.
You can’t expect the old desktop software to stay magically compatible with Web.
Not syncing the field at all is even worse I think.

The solution is really simple: just do as we keep recommending and STOP using the desktop software. Just use the Web software only.

You keep repeating to stop using the desktop software, and we users keep asking for a couple of features that are not available in Web yet so we can actually move. :innocent: I even don’t like the desktop app anymore because it is horribly slow.

I understand it will not magically be compatible. My idea complies with your statement. It is not compatible anymore with the latest Web features and not syncing the HDR field is the first victim of this.

I don’t know how other users think of this idea. I am only 1 user.

At the end of the day I can live with this.

Fingers crossed it will work hehe. But yeah it probably will

That’s a great suggestion — a multi-select checkbox would make it much easier to track releases with multiple HDR formats. I’ve definitely seen some with both Dolby Vision and HDR10, so being able to mark both would be super helpful. Hope the devs consider this!

In fact, we’ve already confirmed this will happen (for Mobile and Web) !

Desktop too please

@roybo - The devs have already confirmed that the desktop version is no longer under development and that no further updates will be released.

@CLZ_Alwin - can we lock this thread please? I fear that we are about to repeat the 2-week long discussion that has already taken place in this thread on the matter of desktop development.

@sinjinza1984 I’m aware, but it never hurts to ask

Closing the thread  I think all is said and done for now!
