May convert, but

I am a diehard CLZ Movie Collector user but still hope to one day to convert to Movie Connect so I decided to give the 7-day trial a go and see the differences. I was pleasantly surprised with much of the platform yet I feel some things fell short. So I’ve made a few observations as to what it’d take to make me a convert.

  1. First off the overall look is rather bland. The backdrop image is washed out from the details panel and I could find no means to alter it. Some of Movie Collector like options would be nice.

  2. I next reviewed and played with the various edit screens and made some thoughts

  4. I suggest Adding a tab for DIGITAL information as many collectors have large digital collections in addition to our physical media. Here is what I’ve added to my Movie Collector software to show as an example.

  5. :+1: I’m glad the loan tab is gone, and never did understand what “Chapters” was for.

  6. I also put up a test movie in Collector and one thing I found is that some of the ICONs have disappeared, or have changed when it Sync’d with the cloud and then imported to Movie Connect.

Overall, I think that Movie Connect is almost there but still needs some work before I’ll be converting. I commend the CLZ crew on the current state of things and await what the future will bring for us.

We will get back to you on all of the comments above, but I was curious about one thing:

Add Sync button as the auto sync is slow

Movie Connect is cloud-based software. It operates directly on the CLZ Cloud data. That is why Movie Connect does not have a sync button, it is, by definition, always in sync with the CLZ Cloud.

@CLZ_Alwin
When I make a change locally in Collector and sync it, I’d have to refresh the M Connect page a couple of times and switch folders in order to see the change. Also noticed that the Backdrop image will not change.

What is the “M Connect page” ?

Backdrop doesn’t sync, those always get loaded from the central Core. That is expected.

And of course if you sync it wouldn’t appear “directly while viewing the page” - usually on the web (yes, Google Docs etc not) webpages have to REFRESH, to show the new changes that are (already there) on the server.

Important: you do not have to hit refresh : Once you sync from your movie collector program, the changes are all right uploaded to Cloud, and they’re immediately in your Connect, ready to be loaded whenever you would click that movie or refresh the page.

But:
That said, this is about maybe one day converting to Movie Connect - which means you never have to sync on your computer again

Now: I will address some of your points, but I’m not here to convince you to go to Connect because looking at how custom you have created Movie Collector for yourself it might just never ever be feasible for you. And wih all extra fields and icons and template things you’re creating, going to Connect might just be further and further away from you.

So, my replies aren’t to get you to Connect, but I noticed a couple of things you said would be good for Connect that are already possible, and I now do need to get that rectified if anyone else ever reads this post and thinks “ah that’s not possible”.

  1. First off the overall look is rather bland. The backdrop image is washed out from the details panel and I could find no means to alter it. Some of Movie Collector like options would be nice.

Backdrop comes from Core and is loaded from there. Users can’t set their own backdrop. This might happen in the future.

I’m not sure what you mean with bland. But I do know that it could be very hard to switch from a program you’ve used for years to something else and it just looks different of course.

That said “some of Movie Collector like options would be nice”
Which exactly? Did you find the card views? The shelf view? They’re at the top:

I next reviewed and played with the various edit screens and made some thoughts

It kinda looks like you’re also making request for the Windows version here?

IMDb number:
We never had this in Connect - and that is a good thing.
If you can’t find your movie, you can “add by IMDB” and enter the number, and he movie goes in your list with the IMDb number internally stored, and a clickable IMDb number.

TheMovieDB number:
Doesn’t do anything in Connect/isn’t there indeed, not going to happen.

Audience Ratings:
Those come from Core, and can not be modified by the user. Since Movie Connect began we may have had 2 or 3 request for this field to be able to modify as user. But you can always let us know and we’ll fix them in Core, and boom they’re in your Movie Connect as well. They also do not sync by the way.

Multiple HDR:
Yes this is on the to do list for Movie Connect and CLZ Movies. But this is the same type of field in Movie Collector.

Screen Ratios:
I don’t understand, you can set as many Screen Ratios as you want.

Layers:
Layers are 1 per movie, and this will not change.
This should work for 99.9 percent of your movies right?
I would honestly also feel this might be a bit of a field that is not useful to have.

Get live current values:
Yeah that would be cool if there was a source for that, and a company we could partner up with, but unfortunately there isn’t much of that.
That said, for a lot of DVDs/Bluray you could guess a value of maybe 1 - 10 bucks.
Live current values would be very cool, but I’d say it’s highly unlikely that it will ever happen.

Covers:
Backdrops come from Core and can not be modified by users on Connect/Mobile. Movie Poster is on the to do list for Connect and mobile app. More images is also on the to do list for Connect and mobile app.
Need better editing options: You can crop the image. If you need more editing done on the image, it might be better to just copy the image, paste it into your image editor on your computer and then upload it again to the movie.

Missing spoken language:
The “Plot” tab on Movie Collector does not have a “spoken language” field. There is a “plot language” field though, but that is for the language in which the plot is showing. That is not a field on Movie Connect. To enter the spoken audio language, use the Audio Tracks field (Dolby Digital 5.1 [English] for instance).

Editing trailer links:
Is on the ideas list for Connect.

  1. Other Stuff

Collection Status: Missing:
I don’t think I heard of that idea before, but we have a couple of suggestion for Collection Statuses.
Would “Not in Collection” not work for you?

Find Duplicate Movies:
Already possible. In Movie Connect: Click the menu top left, then click Find Duplicates to… find duplicates!

Sync button:
We touched upon this, it is not needed as Movie Connect is always in sync, as it loads its data when loaded, directly from the server to which you sync.

Skins:
Already possible: Open the menu top left, go to Settings, and you can choose from 4 skins:
Default
Light
Dark
Blue

Edit episodes:
We might add more fields to edit on episodes such as the fields you get from Core (like airdate/title/plot etc) - but it’s likely for now that’s it.

Digital tab:
Currently unlikely as the focus of the program is to catalog your physical collection.
That said we do indeed provide format icons for a lot of these digital formats so perhaps something can be done.
That said, when we allow User Defined Fields to sync up once to Movie Connect, you’re golden that would allow you to send all those Digital Info fields you made right into Connect!

  1. :+1: I’m glad the loan tab is gone, and never did understand what “Chapters” was for.

I don’t know what you mean here. What is the loan tab?
Some movies are divided into sections called chapters, which help you view a specific place in a movie. That is what the field was for on the Windows version, but it’s a field that was introduced way back when that was really a thing for people, which it is much less - or not at all - anymore.

I also put up a test movie in Collector and one thing I found is that some of the ICONs have disappeared, or have changed when it Sync’d with the cloud and then imported to Movie Connect.

It is important to understand that “format icons” or any icon you create/add yourself in the Windows version in a Pick List, does not sync.

Movie Connect comes with its own library of icons (which need updating, which is currently on my to-do list), and users can not change this - and it is currently also not planned to change that!

Overall, I think that Movie Connect is almost there but still needs some work before I’ll be converting. I commend the CLZ crew on the current state of things and await what the future will bring for us.

Thank you. Please do know that from what we see how you customized/modified your Movie Collector we here do think that Movie Connect might just never work for you - if those are things you can’t let go of. And we of course do need to be honest that some fields, even if they were logical to have in the past in Movie Collector, might just never make it to Movie Connect/CLZ Movies.

Pff. I need a beer. This was a lot of time to reply haha.

A= Movie Connect

A=LOL that is what I was trying to update

A= It looks just like “The Cloud” I was hoping it would have more options like Movie Collector does… wishful thinking

A= I did

A= I just brought this Euro Release into Movie Connect It clearly is a BFFC 18 release but it imports as a US “R” release, I’m just saying if we had the ability to correct it’d be nice.

A= No, I disagree a very large portion of my collection contain multi-disc options with 4k/BR or BR/DVD or other combinations Additionally more “Layer” options should be available.

Awaiting updates

AJ, I appreciate the dialog. I’m happy to see so much good change is in the future for Movie Connect. I’m not to ready to commit just yet but haven’t closed the door either.

Time for my beer :beers: Cheers

A= It looks just like “The Cloud” I was hoping it would have more options like Movie Collector does… wishful thinking

Ahh the horror of templates in the Windows version  (nightmare to maintain).
We indeed currently have just one template, which can be skinned in a couple different colors.

A= I just brought this Euro Release into Movie Connect It clearly is a BFFC 18 release but it imports as a US “R” release, I’m just saying if we had the ability to correct it’d be nice.

Go to the menu top left, then go to Settings. Now, set the "Core Audience Rating region to Great Britain, and then add your movies. The audience rating for your movie will come from our Core, based on the country you select. We have this one as “18” for Great Britain, so it’s all good.

A= No, I disagree a very large portion of my collection contain multi-disc options with 4k/BR or BR/DVD or other combinations Additionally more “Layer” options should be available.

I don’t see this happening I’m afraid.

Roybo,

Thanks for the thorough explanation of why us Movie Collector users do not want to switch to Connect. There is just so much customization that you can do with Movie Collector, and as soon as you think you have it the way you want, you then go back in and spend hous and hours changing the look agin. I understand why the CLZ team is switching over to the web, and I do support them with a subscription to connect, but I don’t really use it. Each month I wait and hope there will be new improvements to connect and some more customization options, but it’s few and far apart. The last major one for me that was useful was the customization of the actors list. While improvement to the search function is nice, it’s not major. With connect we have to rely on the CLZ team as to when or if they are going to make changes. I think Alwin has stated before how much of a headache the Movie Collector program is and that they made it too good with too many options for the useers, but this is what made it so good, and why I kept subscribing for years. Lets hope some new changes to Connect are coming soon.

John

Hi guys,
Good to hear that you are interesting in switching to Movie Connect, in the end.
Thanks for the feedback on what is still missing, before you can make that switch.

John, could you, from. your point of view, elaborate on that?

Is that about customization of the data? If so, which fields? Or is it about User Defined Fields?
Or is it about customization of the user interface? If so, what in particular?

I know that Roybo is all about customizing pick list images. Is that the same for you?

What would be the customization options we should work on, in your opinion?

We are working on Connect, and have a lot of cool stuff planned, but I am getting the feeling our road map does not match yours
