Pick Lists migration

I use 2 computers (laptop and a desktop) with Comic Collector. This is for convenience allowing me to work on my collection. I upload my changes to the cloud and download them to the other PC.

I am having issues with managing the pick list. I’ve got duplicate entries (Series). I merge them to clean it up but then they reappear on the other PC.

How can I reconcile any (All) of the Pick List on 2 PCs?

Thanks

The pick lists themselves do not sync. Only your comics sync.

So if you merge series to become one (because of spelling error/duplicate), then the change for the series itself will sync through, but the old (and now probably unused) series will remain on the PC you’re syncing to.

That said, if they have the same “display name” just a different sortname, it might not sync through correctly, as the computer you’re syncing through might see it as the same series.

If you’ve cleaned all of them, you could do a new sync on your other computer via File > New Database, then sync everything down fresh, which will of course fix it in one go.

Thanks AJ. Will try that.

Most appreciated

AJ,

Thanks for the explanation. I’m in process of doing this now.

Related question: I also sync my database to my phone that has CLZ 9.9.2 Do I have to manually merge the pick list dupes? How can I clean up the series pick list so they are in sync with the PC?

Thanks

AJ,

Well I finally was able to sync my cloud account to a “New Database” on my laptop. The Series Pick list is still not right. Example all the Amazing Spider-Man series now are sorted on “Amazing Spider-Man”. How do I keep the 1963 series sorted from the 1999 series? Or from the 2014 restart?

Please advise

Thanks

Can you show me a screenshot of your pick list and the problems?

And make sure that for displaying you use the display name, not the sort name, this is done in Tools > Options, then look for the sorting settings there.

I would recommend waiting with the phone version until we get your data correct on your computer.

AJ,

I have screenshots from both PCs. I made a PDF to show you. How do I get the file to you? It’s 2.5 MB in size

Thanks

You can send me the file(s) via:

Or just paste the screenshots as loose images here.

Make sure to mention the forum if you use WeTransfer!

We Transfer link Unique Download Link | WeTransfer

Thanks

I’ve taken a look at your screenshots in that WeTransfer PDF file… but what I’m seeing right away (and yes I do see the difference between laptop and computer) is that your sort names for your Spider-Man series are all the same.

You should really generate sort names for that via the Manage Pick Lists, on one computer

Then see if they sort correctly after that.

Then sync and see if it updates on the other computer too.

I’m thinking that having them all set to the same sort name will cause troubles.

AJ,

I have done that (generated unique sort names) on the desktop PC (see page 8). Each Amazing Spider-Man series has a unique name in the sort column.

When I sync to the other computer the sort names list turns to all the same names (see page 3).

This is the problem.

Sync’ing doesn’t fix because the Manage Pick-List (Series) doesn’t upload to the cloud.

Downloading to a “New Database” doesn’t work because the default Manage Pick List doesn’t have unique names for all the Amazing Spider-Man series.

Just to clarify, in the PDF…

pages 3,4, and 5 are from the target PC (laptop)

pages 7,8, and 9 are from the desktop PC

I want to have the Manage Pick List - Series Sort Name column and the Display Names Column the same on both computers.

Can you please fix, on one computer, one The Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 3 series?

And please do this in Manage Pick Lists, and search for AMAZING to make sure you don’t miss any The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 that might be split off. There might be multiple.

Select them both, right click, merge them to 1 of them.

Make sure you set the sort name of the series to something that makes sense too ( so “Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 3” as sortname, “The Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 3” as name.

Because issues in your collection use that series item, they will be updated. Now sync on that computer.

Now sync on the other computer.

Does the change come through? (with that, check your Manage Pick List screen again, and note that the amount “used” for the new series is indeed correct (and the bad one is 0, as it will not be removed).

If that works we can continue.

AJ,

Hello. I have completed the following.

  1. On my desktop PC - Verified that there is only one entry for Amazing Spider-Man, The Vol. 3
Sort Name column = Amazing Spider-Man, The Vol. 3
Display Name column = Amazing Spider-Man, The Vol. 3

  2. I sync’d the desktop PC to the CLZ Cloud. 28 items uploaded

  3. I sync’d the CLZ Cloud to my laptop PC. 28 items downloaded

  4. The results were noted on the laptop PC:
Sort Name column = Amazing Spider-Man
Display column = Amazing Spider-Man, The Vol. 3

Where is the Sort Name column getting the “Amazing Spider-Man” entry?

Thanks

I’m thinking because your other PC still has the ID matched to the “wrong name”, it will downsync and see “oh I already have this series ID, I will just match these too that series”.

I’m betting if you’d do a file > new database, then sync, then the volume 3 one will sync correctly down.

You could test that to see if that works… or, fix all of them on 1 PC, then sync.
Then on the other PC do “File > New Database” and then sync - because then there is no way it can grab any bad ones from anywhere.

I do wonder how this came to be though - did you at some point play with sortnames and display names?

Where is the Series ID?

Yes as previously explained I sync’d the Display Name with the Sort name. This was to sort vol. 3 from all other volumes.

Do I understand right, that the Display Name get uploaded but the Sort Name does not when a comic is added?

The Series ID can be found by activating your “CLZ Series ID” column in your list view.

I have another thing for you to try, but it would only work if you would like to end up with our original Core series data. Which is probably best when it comes to series sortnames etc.

I recommend doing this on one computer only, and do not do anything yet on the other.

It works like so:

  • Go to your “all issues” list
  • Select all issues
  • Right click them, then select “Update from Core”
  • Then in the popup select “REPLACE” for “SERIES”
  • Make it go.

When finished do this:

  • go to menu Edit > Manage Pick Lists
  • Click the Series list
  • Click the little square with checkmark at the top. This selects all UNUSED SERIES
  • OK the popup
  • Click the recycle bin to remove all unused series.

Now:

  • Click menu CLZ Cloud > Synchronize

Then on the other computer:

  • Click menu File > New Database
  • Click menu CLZ Cloud > Synchronize.

I made a video how to use that Update from Core / Replace series, where you see that my Spider-mans go into the right series//get renamed. And where I remove the unused one (which is important).

AJ

I DL to a new database. All the Amazing Spider-Man Sort Name are the same.

All the Unused Series are either merged or deleted.

I’m sorry this is taking so long, it should not be that hard  of course!

When I look at that screenshot, I’m also seeing custom Display names with years behind them. That feels like the step of “update from core” and “replace series data” was not taken correctly.

First thing: would you be okay to just have the Core display and sort names?

It would not include the “year” in the display name.

If so:
Would you be open to do a Teamviewer session where I log in to your computer that has your most recent database, where I fix everything on that one PC, then I clear your cloud and sync from that one PC?

Then you have to do “new db” and download again and it really should be fixed then

Would that be something you’re open to?

If so please contact me through help.clz.com and mention this topic.
