I’ve been looking at the new shiny on-line replacement for MuC & can see the appeal. So, while I’m still more comfortable using the legacy desktop version there will be a time when migration is a sensible option. It does do certain things better, some a little worse or differently. With that in mind I’ve been trying to fit my data into the standard fields with a modicum success but there is one set that I can’t do without & can’t find an easy way to replicate on Music Web.
I use composition dates a to order my collection. That’s quite straightforward with pop music & jazz. There are fields for Recording Date, Original Release date & Release Date & they correctly sort my favourite bands & artists but those fields are totallly unsuited for Classical music. Take for example Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, written in 1721 & for which I have recordings from 1972-2013. It becomes even more complicated when the album covers works from different periods. CDs with multiple works can cover decades or centuries. None of this is conveyed by the recording or album release date.
To get around this I have created two User Defined field “Date Span Start” & Date Span End" and use these to order my collection in a way meaningful to me.
I have tried to move this information to “Track, Composition, Year” but there are problems with that, the main one being I can’t sort on it.
I guess what I’m asking is whether User Defined fields will ever be ported to the Web version or, if not, could a couple of suitable, sortable date fields be added. I really can’t see me moving across if I lose this function
