Hi there,
are the Windows Apps already EOL? In the shop you can´t buy the Music App for Windows?
greetings Lukas
We have stopped the development of the legacy Collector desktop software quite a while ago (early 2023).
There will not be any feature updates anymore, but we may still do maintenance/compatibility updates when absolutely necessary.
Our complete focus is on the CLZ Web web-based software and of course the CLZ mobile apps.
For use on your computer, the CLZ Web software is the way to go and we are recommending all desktop users to switch to the web-based software ASAP.
Since the new CLZ.com website, the legacy Collector desktop software has been removed from the site and is not available for new users anymore. Existing users can still renew your desktop software, by LOGGING IN to the CLZ Shop at https://shop.clz.com.
More about Collector versus CLZ Web in a forum post here:
(you do not need a forum account to read this topic)
Let me know if you have further questions,
ok. i would switch to the Web-based software but unfortunatley i miss some features like the filter in the windows app. Let´s assume i´m looking for a game that genre is Action and Adventure. I can only filter for Action or Adventure but don´t both together. In the Windows Version you can save own Filter. This is a great tool and very important to sort and filter games. It is a must have!
It would be nice if we could change names of the fields.
The next issue. I have all my games either on shelves or in metal boxes. I would like to sort the games as follows. Box 1 place 1, box 2 place 2… Box 2 place 1… look at the picture. Something has gone wrong.
I see. That is indeed not possible in the Web edition at the moment.
I understand this is a must have for you, but we have found that most of the Windows desktop users never ever use the filter feature. Which is why this feature has never made it to the web-based software.

Which field are you using for that “place” number?
Oh wait, that is one field, probably a text field, which explains the alphabetic sorting.
I use the field >> Storage Device << for my Boxes 1-3 and the fild >> Slot << for the numbers 1- 200.
It works in the windows App and in the Web Edition. But in the Web Edition the order is not correct.
Is the filter feature planned for the web edtion? At the moment I´m fine with the Windows App but the Web Edition is nice too.
The filter feature is currently not planned for the Web edition.
FWIW, I also use the filter feature quite a bit. It’s very handy to exclude items from lists based on tags, for example.
The switch to web-based apps is (somewhat) understandable, BUT - I tried CLZ Movies web more than 5 years ago and it wasn’t for me then. I’d give it another shot to see how it evolved, but as I already tried it, my trial period ended and now I’d have to actually commit and subscribe. I can just transfer my current subscription from Movie Collector to CLZ Movies web, but would I be able to go back?..
It is no problem to let you try it again for 7 days.
Sure, you can always go back.
Thanks.
I tried, but the web app is really not for me. Mostly because not being able to link and/or search by local files is a deal breaker. I’ve used Movie Collector for maybe 20 years. It’s a shame it won’t see further development, and I am not quite sure it’s worth its yearly subscription if it doesn’t. But thanks for the good times.
I am sorry to hear that.
Just curious: Movie Collector for Windows has not received any updates since July 2023, so no updates for over 16 months.
Did that affect your usage of the software in any way? I mean, Movie Collector is subscription software, you pay for USING the software. In the past 16 months, you have been fully able to use the software, exactly the same as before that period.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand that you are disappointed that the software will not be developed any further, but… does it really affect your usage?
Also, I must ask, did you actually enjoy the last updates we did do?
Those are the only updates in the past 2 years. Would you see these 3 updates WERE worth the yearly subscription?
We did get a lot of hate about the v23.3 release, people did not like that at all
The 23.2 release with CLZ Scanner support has been a complete “meh, who cares…” from users
23.1 with the movie trailers as thumbnails was not big positive release either…
So… does it REALLY matter we do not do update for Movie Collector anymore?
Well… Keep in mind it comes from a place of love, but you asked.
I can’t speak of how other people use the app, but for me - no update has been beneficial for probably at least 10 years. I started using Movie Collector as a cataloging software, great for keeping track of what i own and browsing that collection to find something to watch. It’s been doing that since forever and buying the license was a no brainer.
When you moved to a subscription-based model i obliged because i love the app and because i was still somewhat hoping that one day the one feature i found was missing (extracting metadata from video files) would be added. But if the app is frozen and will not be updated anymore, then it should be a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
I get that the cloud sync feature, CLZ core etc, this all takes continued work, but - and again, this may well be just me - i don’t care about cloud sync and preferred when it was using imdb anyway…
I also get why a software company would prefer developing web-based apps. But a web app could access a locally stored database file, and at the same time allow to link and catalog local movie files. CLZ web doesn’t do that, so for my purpose it is useless. I can’t use it.
So to answer your question, yes, it does matter quite a bit that Movie Collector will no longer be updated. Because i can still use and enjoy it but, even if not just yet, it will slowly die. And that’s a shame.
Why is that exactly?
The Core online movie database is NOT frozen. We are still adding all weekly releases for you, we all improving the database, especially the DVD/Blu-ray cover images continuously. The Cloud Sync system is still working for you, still storing your data online.
THAT is what most of the subscription fees are all about. Not about updates.
preferred when it was using imdb anyway…
We are still using IMDB, even on an official IMDb data license now, costing us a fortune every year.
That is fine, but that is a VERY SPECIFIC usage. Most users use the software for cataloging their DVDs and Blu-rays, actual physical boxes.
I still don’t understand. Why would you need updates exactly?
The answer is in the part you quoted. Right now i don’t (though i would have loved to see a few extra features), but as the app stops being maintained, one day it will die off. Because a Windows update will break a dependency or whatever. Until then i can absolutely still use it, i said that. I’m just sad to know that the days of the longest-tenured app i’ve used on Windows outside of probably Office are counted.
And also sad that the replacement offered by the same developer has done away with one major (yes: to me) feature that was, until then, always part of the app and which wouldn’t have been terribly complicated to implement in the new version.
But… we said we were gonna keep doing compatibility updates like that. Also, there have not been breaking Windows updates for many years. Maybe last time with the introduction of Windows 10? Even that was mostly small installation annoyances.
And also sad that the replacement offered by the same developer has done away with one major (yes: to me) feature that was, until then, always part of the app and which wouldn’t have been terribly complicated to implement in the new version.
Scanning local hard-drives for movies files from a web-based software will never be possible Browsers do not allow that for security reason.
So yes, this is “terribly complicated” and even impossible.
“for as long as it is feasible” is what you actually said, after making it clear that “the complete focus of our developers is on the Connect web-based software and the CLZ mobile apps”.
So yes, again, i know - i can still use the app, everything is fine. For now. But long term, i can expect to see it go away.
Scanning hard drives, maybe. Letting the user point to a file and record its path, though?
Yeah, that would be possible. But who’s gonna do that for thousands of movies in a collection?
I think linking to movie files without being able to scan your computer would be a useless feature.
If you only have potential new customers in mind, who would start using the app today to catalog an already-existing collection of thousand of titles, sure.
But if you consider existing users who already have a vast database on the desktop app and find their collection amputated of all links when migrating to the web app - that stings.
Hated to see CLZ has stopped updating the desktop software. I much prefer to have the software on my PC rather than relying on the cloud. If servers go down or local internet is down, users can’t access their data. It happens enough to be really annoying.
I starting using CLZ software years go because it was easier than setting up my own DB. I’m going to have to rethink that decision now. I understand maintaining the current software versions has costs but if you aren’t actively developing it, there should be a drop in the subscription price going forward.
